Welcome to The Henderson Project Website |
The Henderson Project is the result of two Henderson natives and architects, Mark Bethel and Tim Skinner, who currently serve on the Visioning Committee for the University of Kentucky, School of Architecture, and have provided annual scholarships to the college.
The project launched in June 2007 as more or less as a class project. For Mark and Tim, this was a way to give back to their alma mater and provide students hands-on experience in using their undergraduate skills to invision new ideas for a community experieincing "brain drain" of its young people.
This project involving students from the University of Kentucky’s School of Design and Southern California Institute of Architecture traveled to Henderson with no preconceived ideas or intent. It was, for all practical purposes, a means for the students to learn.
The result of this five-day "Visioning Charrette," however, was unprecedented and viable ideas for the revitalization and branding of Henderson. Those in the community that came and listened to the students with their "outside looking in" ideas were energized by what they heard.
Since then, an enthusiastic leadership team was embraced by the Henderson Community and the University of Kentucky to dive deeper into creating an ongoing and workable program that will not only use Henderson as its first palette, but will become a model for how a university can use its talent and resources to further a small-town community.
With that, a new graduate degree program has been funded by Fellowship Donors listed on this website. The $250,000 raised locally will enable The Henderson Project to be the course of study over a three-year period by the best and brightest selected from many graduate degree applicants across the world.
A new dean to the College of Design, Michael Speaks, will lead the charge. And Henderson native and initial instructor on the project, Drura Parrish, will remain closely involved.
We look forward to invovling the community in this endeavor in the coming years and encourage you to think outside of the box with us and dream with the best and brightest the world has to offer.
All eyes will be on Henderson nationally and internationally to see what success we can create together. It's an exciting time to be in Henderson!
Mission
"This project is about a small town in America trying to stem the flow of its young people from not returning to their hometown after college. We want to enable them to design their future so they feel invested in it. This is a problem throughout our country and we hope we can make a difference and provide a model for other communities to explore with their youth." --Mark Bethel
