Boom or Bust By Drura Parrish
The small American city is on the brink of boom and bust. Governments strive to bring elite members of the Creative Class to rejuvenate its lowly downtowns (see Paducah), while others seek out companies and industries. The very definition of city is being challenged. Is it a place to work, sleep, and play? Is it one of the above, or some? Or is it none of the above? Who really cares anyway? We do.
So, what about it? What are we doing? We are addressing the big question of what is the future of the small American city? Our case study is Henderson Kentucky, a prime example. Its a daunting task. It is a city steeped in tradition (whether or not it is real is part of the tradition), history (same thing), and characters.
Progress is a relative word in Henderson, and it is our task to listen, impose, hybridize, and provide thoughtful and provocative proposals. It is our job to push as far into the future as possible so Henderson can grab now. We are in a place to overcome insecurities so that we may poke and provoke. It is time Henderson realize what it can be, past the 19th century. |
